Immediate Dentures for Insertion Following Removal of Your Teeth
What Is an Immediate Denture?
Immediate dentures are inserted on the same day as the removal of your natural teeth. These dentures can be either complete or partial.

What Are the Advantages of an Immediate Denture?
The benefits of immediate dentures include avoiding the need to go without teeth in public and making it easier to replicate the shape, color, and alignment of your natural teeth while they are still in place. These dentures are placed immediately after extraction, helping to protect the tissues and minimize bleeding, much like a Band-Aid. Additionally, they allow you to maintain your speech patterns right away, eliminating the need to wait weeks without teeth while your dentures are being made.
What to Expect
Research has shown that even the most well-fitted dentures can only achieve about 20% to 25% of the chewing efficiency of natural teeth. Since palate shape and bone size differ from person to person, the stability of dentures can vary significantly.
Following extractions, the bone will shrink and resorb rapidly for about eight months. During this time, temporary liners are needed to adjust for bone loss and ensure a secure fit for your dentures. Drayton Valley Denture Clinic (1997) Ltd offers these adjustments at no additional charge for the first three months after extractions.
Temporary Liners
These medicated liners are placed to assist healing of tissue following extractions. Temporary liners also keep dentures snug while the major part of shrinkage is taking place. You may eat or drink 30 minutes later.
Our denturists will remove any visible excess remaining. If you detect a small bit that was missed, do not hesitate to carefully scrape it off with a knife.
Do not adjust, scrape, or brush dentures on the inside!

Cleansing Instructions
Soak daily in denture bath with water and a half tablet of mild denture cleanser such as Polident. Brush outside only, being careful not to damage the inside liner. Be aware that prolonged use of a stronger cleaner will dry up the liner very quickly. This liner is only temporary and the life expectancy is about 2 months.

Relines – 9 Months Later
Following the 9 month healing period, patients require a permanent reline. This ‘refitting’ is the necessary result due to the changes that have taken place in the mouth from the loss of bone. A new impression will be taken early in the morning, and by the end of the day your relined denture will be finished.
